Google says K-12 accounts will lose Search unless administrators explicitly enable Gemini tools, as the company begins testing Guided Learning in US schools.
Google will turn off Search entirely for K-12 student accounts in schools that reject its AI features, the company told The New York Times. The policy was included in a broader education update on Tuesday, and Google says administrators cannot disable Gemini-powered tools while keeping Search.
Administrators Must Opt In to AI and Search Together
Under the Tuesday update, access to Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search will be entirely off for K-12 student accounts unless administrators explicitly turn them on. Administrators will not be given the option to toggle Gemini-powered features off without also disabling Search, according to the report.
Google Executive Says Search and AI Are Deeply Integrated
Chris Phillips, Google's vice president of education, told The New York Times that "Search and AI are deeply integrated." He said schools that disable Google's AI features "will not have access to search, and they'll see a message from their school that indicates it's not available." Students in those schools will see notices that Search is not available.
Guided Learning Tests Follow Months of Scrutiny
The change comes months after Google turned its Gemini AI assistant on by default inside Google Classroom, which is used by more than 150 million teachers and students globally. Last month, lawmakers pressed Google on the potential harms of putting its AI products in schools. Google is now embedding its Guided Learning feature, meant to help students work through problems, into AI Overviews in Search, with testing in select US schools to begin this month.
