Four Features Enter Beta Testing
The betas add sound detection, song identification, Live Rewind and Siri Recaps. Sound detection is designed to flag important sounds such as an alarm or doorbell and helps deaf and hard-of-hearing users navigate the world, while song identification uses Shazam's technology. Live Rewind lets a user go back to see what was said in the past 15 seconds, and Siri Recaps summarizes audio throughout the day, saving notes of important things that were said.
Privacy Measures and Practical Use
Apple has taken care to ensure privacy by processing audio and running AI models on-device when possible, and by not identifying speakers, not storing raw audio files and redacting private information such as government ID numbers or personal account information. In a real-world test, Siri Recaps captured key details during a teen's car repair drop-off and a rental pickup, including the deductible, the repair time frame and the amount of gas in the rental at the start.
Extraneous Details and Requested Improvements
With Siri Recaps configured to run at all times, it also captured non-essential items, such as a plan to watch midterms coverage on TV. The author would like extraneous details saved as separate notes or dedicated sections that could be exported or deleted on their own at the end of the day, the ability to swipe left on an individual bullet point to remove it from the recap entirely, and a setting to automatically export saved recaps to Apple's Notes app, possibly into their own folder.
