Wasiirka AI ee UK oo qirtay in tirada £400 bilyan ay ka timid warbixin Google maalgelisay
Kanishka Narayan ayaa sheegay in qiyaasta rasmiga ah ee faa'iidada dhaqaale ee AI ay tahay £120 bilyan
Wasiirka AI ee UK Kanishka Narayan ayaa toddobaadkan qirtay in tirada £400 bilyan ee faa'iidada dhaqaale ee AI ay aad uga sarreysay qiyaasaha rasmiga ah ee dowladda, isagoo sheegay in tiradaas laga soo qaatay warbixin 2023 ah oo Google maalgelisay.
Tirada £400 bilyan iyo qiyaasta rasmiga ah
Muddo laba sano ah, dowladda UK waxay dadweynaha u sheegtay in dalku heli karo koror dhaqaale oo £400 bilyan ah sababtoo ah AI. Narayan ayaa sheegay in qiyaasta dowladda ee faa'iidada AI ay ka yar tahay saddex meelood meel tiradaas. Qiyaasta rasmiga ah, sida uu sheegay, waa in AI iyo maalgashiga xogta ay ku kordhin karaan dhaqaalaha UK £55 bilyan ilaa £140 bilyan marka la gaaro 2030, iyadoo qiyaasta dhexe ay tahay £120 bilyan.
Warbixinta Google maalgelisay iyo isticmaalka ballaaran
Narayan ayaa sheegay in tirada £400 bilyan laga soo qaatay warbixin 2023 ah oo si cad loo heli karo, oo Google maalgelisay, kana soo saartay shirkadda la-talinta ee Public First, oo hadda loo yaqaan PF Global. Waaxdo iyo hay'ado dowladda ah ayaa isticmaalay tiradaas ku dhowaad laba sano, laba dowladood. Wasiiradu waxay haysatay qiyaasta hoose ugu yaraan tan iyo Nofembar 2025, laakiin Skills England ayaa weli daabacayay tirada hore afar bilood ka dib.
Dib u eegis iyo walaac ku saabsan kalsoonida tirakoobka
Jonathan Dupont, madaxa dhaqaalaha PF Global, ayaa sheegay in farqiqa qayb ahaan sabab u tahay waxa ay u arkaan gaabis ahaanshaha qaadashada AI ee dowladda. Dame Chi Onwurah, oo ah xildhibaan Labour ah oo guddoomiya Guddiga Sayniska, Hal-abuurka iyo Tignoolajiyada ee Aqalka Hoose, ayaa sheegtay in warbixinnadan ay muujinayaan caqabad ka mid ah kuwa ugu waaweyn: buunbuunin. Lord Holmes of Richmond ayaa sheegay inay nasiib-darro tahay in tiradaas si weyn oo sax ah loo hagaajiyay, isagoo intaa ku daray inay fiicnaan lahayd in dowladda ay tan si dhakhso ah oo toos ah u caddayso.
Kanishka Narayan says the headline number came from a 2023 report commissioned by Google, while the government's central estimate is £120 billion.
UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan has acknowledged that the £400 billion economic boost the government has cited for two years was significantly higher than its own projections, and that the figure came from a 2023 report commissioned by Google, WIRED reported.
Government's lower estimate
In a parliamentary answer, Narayan said AI adoption and data investment could add £55 billion to £140 billion to the UK economy by 2030, with a central estimate of £120 billion. He described even that assessment as a "hugely uncertain" estimate, and said the £400 billion figure was drawn from a publicly available 2023 report commissioned by Google and produced by Public First, now known as PF Global.
Two years of use across government
Government departments and agencies used the £400 billion figure for almost two years, under two governments. Ministers have had the lower estimate since at least November 2025, yet Skills England was still publishing the old figure four months later. Narayan's answer is the first recorded evidence WIRED could find of the government setting the two numbers side by side, or saying the report was commissioned by Google.
Criticism from parliamentarians
Dame Chi Onwurah, the Labour MP who chairs the Commons Science, Innovation and Technology Committee, said: "The government is right to promote the potential for technology like AI to improve public services. However, these reports highlight one of the central barriers to delivering the digital transformation of public services my committee has identified: hype."
Lord Holmes of Richmond, the Conservative peer who asked ministers in January 2025 about the origins of the £400 billion claim but did not receive a response, said: "It is unfortunate that the figure used repeatedly by the government, and then, unsurprisingly, by multiple other organizations has now been significantly and rightly adjusted. It would have been better for the government to clarify this much sooner and more directly."
