I was 21 years old then, so also having an ambition of feeding 100 kids felt momentous. But now growing up, but also figuring out that you can do more, and just being obsessed with 'How much more can you do? How much more can you do?' led me here." Waxay sidoo kale tiri: "From 25 kids to now, I feel like there's not one challenge that we haven't overcome."

Qiyaastii 80% cuntada ururku qaybiyo waxay ka timaaddaa beeralayda yaryar. Njiru waxay tiri: "For a long time, school meals were viewed as charity. We've proven that it's economic infrastructure."
Abaalmarinta iyo yoolka 1 milyan oo arday
Abaalmarinta Afrika ee Jarmalka waxaa bixiya Jaaliyadda Afrika ee Jarmalka (DAS), oo ah jaaliyad aan xisbi ku xidhnayn. Wasiirka Horumarinta Jarmalka Reem Alabali Radovan ayaa Abaalmarinta Afrika ee Jarmalka ku wareejin doona Njiru fiidnimada Arbacada. Njiru waxay hadafkeeda ku tilmaantay in ay maalin kasta gaarto 1 milyan oo arday. The 35-year-old founder of Food4Education began with a fundraiser for 25 children and now runs an operation with 6,000 staff.
Wawira Njiru, a 35-year-old Kenyan social entrepreneur, is being honored with this year's German Africa Prize. Her organization, Food4Education, feeds 600,000 children in Kenya every day and has 6,000 staff on its payroll.
From a small fundraiser to a national operation
Njiru started her first fundraiser for 25 school children when she was 21, after studying nutrition science in Adelaide, Australia. She said her early ambition was modest: "My dream then, my ambition was to feed 100 kids every day. I was 21 years old then, so also having an ambition of feeding 100 kids felt momentous." Food4Education now provides meals to 19,000 schools across Kenya.
Small payments, digital tracking and local farmers
Parents contribute a small amount for school meals, which in some cases is 5 Kenyan shillings (3 US cents). Every child has a wristband under the "Tap-to-Eat" system, which tracks meals and payments. About 80% of the food distributed comes from small-scale farmers. Njiru said: "For a long time, school meals were viewed as charity. We've proven that it's economic infrastructure."
Attendance gains and a goal of one million children
Data show that children at participating schools miss fewer classes and perform better at school. Raphaera Kanya, director of a primary school in Nairobi, said: "Food is everything. When your stomach has nothing, you cannot understand anything in class." Njiru aims to reach 1 million schoolchildren every day. German Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan will present the prize on Wednesday evening.
