Somaliland President Cabdiraxmaan Maxamed Cabdillaahi (Cirro) faced sharp criticism after a Washington interview at the Hudson Institute on 14 September, in which he struggled to answer questions on mineral wealth, the Sudan conflict and the rationale for US recognition of his country.
A Flawed Mineral Answer
During the Hudson Institute event, which focused on Somaliland's strategic role in the Horn of Africa, Cirro was asked about the type of mineral resources his country could offer the United States. He laughed and replied, 'Ma garanayo… malaha wax walba' ('I don't know… maybe everything').
This response followed a separate interview with Semafor, in which Cirro told Washington he could offer ports, minerals and potential military cooperation, while also insisting that 'wax bilaash ah' ('free things') would not be provided. Reuters had previously reported in February that the territory holds minerals, oil, gas and lithium deposits.
Sudan and the Recognition Question
When asked about the conflict in Sudan, Cirro said the country was 'aad uga fog tahay' ('far away from') Somaliland, comparing the distance to that between Venezuela and the United States. The interviewer pushed back, noting Sudan was not that distant, before moving on.
On the topic of US recognition, Cirro stated, 'Ficil ahaan Somaliland kama mid aha Soomaaliya' ('In practice, Somaliland is not part of Somalia'), before adding, 'Mabda'a ahaan Somaliland waxay ka mid tahay Soomaaliya' ('In principle, Somaliland is part of Somalia'). Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991, while the federal government and many international partners still regard it as part of the country.
Criticism and Context
Cameron Hudson, a former US government official and Africa analyst, sharply criticised the interview, calling Cirro a leader who could not deliver his message to Washington. He used the phrase 'African Biden' to describe the president's performance, suggesting he was stumbling over words he had rehearsed.
Israel became the first UN member state to formally recognise Somaliland on 26 December 2025, prompting strong condemnation from Mogadishu. Since then, Somaliland has intensified its outreach to Washington, which it views as its top priority for recognition, offering the Berbera port and security cooperation in exchange for diplomatic engagement.
