Voters from Australia describe costly journeys to cast ballots in person, with one saying 'our motherland needs us right now'
Political activists have mobilised to bring thousands of overseas Israeli citizens to Israel to vote, with one US-based non-profit estimating that as many as 67,000 voters are returning for the election.
Fly&Vote Initiative Draws Voters From Several Continents
The AID Coalition, a US-based non-profit, bases its estimate on surveys of expatriates and registration data gathered for its Fly&Vote initiative. It says about half of the returning voters are flying in from the United States, with others coming from Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. In September, the Likud party tried to block the initiative by lodging an appeal with the elections committee, but withdrew the case after reaching an agreement.
Australian Voters Describe Costly Journeys
Anat Dror, an Israeli citizen who has lived in Melbourne for almost five years and recently became an Australian citizen, said she believed anywhere between 500 and 1,000 Israeli citizens from Australia were making the journey. "The sentiment for us is that right now, voting is absolutely essential," she said. "This is our motherland and our motherland needs us right now." Guy Marom, who moved to Australia with his family during the COVID-19 pandemic, said he was undecided but insisted a "change" party would get his vote.
Voters Voice Distrust of Politicians
Dror said she did not trust any single politician's words before elections, adding that she was counting on the change bloc to build a diverse coalition. She said Israel was still reeling from the trauma of Hamas's deadly assault on October 7, 2023. Marom said he believed Benjamin Netanyahu was "maybe not the single cause, but I think he's contributing to the division amongst the people." Channel 12 and Channel 13 data released on Thursday put Gadi Eisenkot's Yashar a few seats ahead of Likud.
