Janelle Tonkin, a former Northern Territory Police assistant commissioner, has taken her former colleagues to court after an AI-generated sexually explicit video was created using her official police photograph and shared among serving members of the force.
The Deepfake Incident
In December 2025, Ms Tonkin became aware that an AI-generated, sexually explicit video had been created using her official Northern Territory Police photograph. The deepfake video was allegedly shared among serving members of the NT Police Force, causing her significant personal and professional distress.
Ms Tonkin, who is now president of the Australasian Council of Women and Policing, said the incident was not an isolated event but part of a broader set of experiences within the organisation that she intends to reveal publicly when the time is right.
Police Force Response
A Northern Territory Police Force spokesperson said the conduct that Commander Tonkin was subject to was totally unacceptable and that the force has zero tolerance for bullying in any form. They added that recruits are taught standards of conduct and workplace behaviour, including respect and anti-harassment.
However, the spokesperson said they do not comment on internal investigations and were legally constrained from commenting on matters before the court. The outcome of the criminal proceedings on the issue remains unknown.
Call for Workplace Reform
Ms Tonkin said having her professional portrait photograph turned into pornography and circulated among colleagues is something no person should have to experience, at work or anywhere else. She described the incident as extremely distressing, both personally and professionally.
She emphasised that there remains real work to do, from the most senior levels of the Northern Territory Police Force down to the rank and file, to build a workplace where every officer, regardless of gender, race or religion, is treated with the safety, respect and support they are entitled to expect.
