Alpharetta Police Department serves a community of roughly 67,000 people with about 120 officers. The department operates several dozen cameras manufactured by Flock Safety, a company that collects license plate data and makes it searchable by law enforcement agencies nationwide.

Since June 2025, the number of entities receiving data from Alpharetta has grown by approximately 42 percent, while the number of entities sending data to the department has surged by about 125 percent. The town's data-sharing network has now propagated to more than 2,300 nodes across the country.

Automatic Approvals and Nationwide Access

Lieutenant Jason Hiott of the Alpharetta Police Department stated that the department's Flock settings will 'automatically approve' requests for its data from law enforcement agencies within a 500-mile radius. Hiott also noted that the department 'does not share any live feeds, analytics, etc. with anyone.'

Flock spokesperson Jess Montejano claims that data sharing is turned off by default for new and onboarding customers. However, Flock public affairs manager Caroline Bush acknowledged that the Nationwide Lookup tool 'was enabled at some point before February 2025' and found nationwide searches as early as March 2023 for other agencies.

Broader Concerns About Flock's Network

Alpharetta's data-sharing network includes exchanges with agencies that have been rocked by recent incidents of officers misusing Flock technology, including Georgia's Bibb County Sheriff's Department, the Savannah Police Department, and the Dallas Police Department. In Reynoldsburg, Ohio, two officers recently resigned after the department probed their alleged misuse of Flock's technology.

In California, the Palo Alto Police Department had a similar experience with Nationwide Lookup being activated 'for all customers' in mid-2023. Flock quietly 'disabled' Nationwide Lookup for Palo Alto police in October 2024, and for all California law enforcement by March 2025. Palo Alto police did not know Nationwide Lookup had ever been active until December 2025.
