The Qatar Red Crescent Society has launched a new humanitarian project in Abs District, Hajjah Governorate, Yemen, backed by $600,000 from the OCHA Yemen Humanitarian Fund to serve over 50,000 vulnerable people with essential health and nutrition services.
Project Overview and Funding
The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has initiated a comprehensive humanitarian intervention in Abs District, Hajjah Governorate, aimed at reaching more than 50,000 vulnerable individuals across the region. The initiative is fully funded with $600,000 provided through the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs' Yemen Humanitarian Fund, ensuring sustainable support for critical health and nutrition needs.
This project represents a significant step forward in addressing the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Yemen, where health infrastructure remains severely inadequate across many governorates. By channeling resources directly into community-level health facilities, QRCS aims to restore essential services and improve access for populations most affected by the ongoing crisis.
Health Facility Rehabilitation and Services
Five health facilities, including one hospital and four health centers, have been rehabilitated and are now operational under QRCS management. The project provides medications, medical equipment, solar panels, water supply, fuel, operating materials, and staff remunerations to ensure uninterrupted service delivery. These facilities are now equipped to offer primary health care, reproductive health, maternal and child care, emergency medicine, nutrition, and mental health services.
Dr. Munira Dahan Al-Aini, programs specialist at QRCS' office in Yemen, stated that the project enables health facilities to deliver a wide range of medical services, including consultations, medications, free examinations, maternal and newborn care, vaccination, obstetrics including safe C-sections, and malnutrition treatment and prevention. This comprehensive approach ensures that even the most remote communities receive life-saving care.
Nutrition Programs and Community Engagement
The project launches therapeutic and supplementary nutrition programs to treat acute malnutrition among children and women, while creating infant and young child feeding consultation corners at target facilities. Community health volunteers are engaged in screenings and referrals to strengthen early detection mechanisms, alongside community-based screening campaigns and awareness-raising activities for malnutrition prevention and control.
With over 2.2 million children and 1.3 million pregnant or lactating women at risk of malnutrition, and 18.3 million people suffering from food insecurity, this initiative addresses urgent nutritional gaps. QRCS plans to expand its cooperation with OCHA to support more activities in Hajjah and Al-Hudaydah, ensuring continued life-saving health services for Yemen's most vulnerable populations.
