More than 134,000 people have been displaced by fighting along Yemen's West Coast since June, with thousands arriving in Aden and Lahj where Médecins Sans Frontières is deploying mobile teams to deliver urgent medical care to those cut off from health facilities.
Rising Displacement Along the West Coast
Recent clashes along Yemen's West Coast have forced more than 134,000 people from their homes since June, with the International Organization for Migration recording 134,550 displaced individuals by 22 September, including 10,920 in Aden alone. Many families fled with little more than the clothes on their backs, leaving behind homes, possessions and livelihoods in their wake.
Anwar Abdullah, a 29-year-old father of six from Hodeidah governorate, described how fighting broke out near his home on the night of 10 September, prompting him to flee with his wife and children toward Mocha before continuing to Aden. The family now lives in a temporary shelter in the Koud Othmani site in Sheikh Othman district, cooking with firewood due to a lack of basic equipment.
Mobile Teams Deliver Urgent Healthcare to Displaced Populations
Médecins Sans Frontières mobile teams are visiting four sites hosting displaced people in Aden and Lahj, providing medical consultations, rapid tests, vaccinations, malnutrition screening, sexual and reproductive healthcare and referrals. During the first week of the response, teams treated 427 patients across Dar Saad and Sheikh Othman districts in Aden and Tuban district in Lahj, with most patients being women and children.
The four sites were already hosting around 6,500 displaced people before the latest arrivals, and in some locations the population has since doubled. The sites are situated four to 10 kilometres from health facilities, making access difficult for those without transport or funds, particularly given fuel shortages and rising prices.
Health System Under Severe Pressure
MSF teams are treating wounds and injuries, malnutrition, fever, diarrhoea, and untreated infectious and non-communicable diseases among displaced populations. They have also encountered pregnant women who have received no antenatal care, severely malnourished children, and children who are not fully vaccinated, highlighting the depth of the health crisis.
Sara Ghanim, MSF Mobile Health Activity Manager in Aden, said the organisation is seeing huge pressure on a health system that is already collapsing and has faced many challenges for years. MSF continues to assess sites hosting displaced people and is ready to scale up its response if health needs increase as displacement continues.
