Southern Guangdong Province and Hong Kong Brace for Strong Winds and Heavy Rain

Typhoon Noul has made landfall in China’s southern Guangdong province and neighbouring Hong Kong, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the region. Authorities have evacuated hundreds of thousands of people in anticipation of the storm’s impact.

Landfall and Evacuation Details

Noul made landfall at around 3:50am local time on Sunday (19:50 GMT on Saturday) in Huidong county, Huizhou. Over 715,000 people had been relocated for safety by early Sunday in Guangdong province, with some 340,000 people evacuated earlier.

Strong Winds and Heavy Rainfall

The typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometres per hour (68 miles per hour) near its centre. It is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of southern Guangdong and southeastern Fujian provinces over the weekend.

Damage and Injuries

Reports suggest widespread damage in parts of Guangdong province. Uprooted trees were seen in Huilai county. Hong Kong’s airport authority cancelled around 350 flights on Sunday. At least nine people were injured across the city during the typhoon period.

Other Typhoons This Year

Earlier this month, two other typhoons, Bavi and Maysak, affected eastern and southern China respectively, leading to the evacuation of over two million people.
