Rescuers pulled two men from the Trishuli 3A tunnel after hearing voices from inside, confirming that people were still alive despite the passage of nine days since the floods devastated towns and villages. The two survivors were identified as a mechanical foreman and a mechanical supervisor, both in stable condition and flown to a hospital in Kathmandu.
Amir Maharjan, brother to one of the rescued workers, told reporters that the family was on its way to the hospital and expressed deep gratitude. He said, 'I can't explain what we are feeling at the moment. We are just grateful to god.' Army spokesperson Brig. Gen. Raja Ram Basnet confirmed the first rescue, noting that one survivor told rescuers more people were still alive inside the tunnel.
Widespread Disruption Across Nepal's Hydropower Projects
The floods, likely caused by a glacier collapse, struck on August 26, 2026, and at least 557 workers are missing from the Trishuli 3A project alone, with about 115 believed trapped in the main tunnel. Across 12 hydropower projects in Nepal, roughly 900 workers are missing, with approximately 500 thought to be trapped in tunnels.
