Al-Shabaab Militants Launch Co-ordinated Attacks on Kenyan Military Positions
Somali-based Al-Shabaab militants launched coordinated attacks on two Kenyan military positions in the Fiino and Carabiya areas on the outskirts of Mandera town in Kenya’s North Eastern region on Saturday.
The assaults targeted Kenyan Defence Force outposts near the Somali border, a volatile corridor where Al-Shabaab maintains a significant presence.
Local sources reported the first attack struck a Kenyan military base in the Fiino area, while a second attack followed in the Carabiya area.
The official casualty toll from both attacks and the subsequent firefights remains unclear, as the targeted positions are Kenyan military installations. Kenyan security officials have not yet issued any statement regarding the assaults.
The situation along the Kenya-Somalia border remains tense, with increased security force movements reported in several areas.
Analysts note that Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaida-linked militant group based in Somalia, has carried out numerous attacks in Kenya over the past decade.
Kenyan authorities have stepped up intelligence-led operations to prevent cross-border assaults, recently killing 11 suspected Al-Shabaab militants and recovering three PKM machine guns and 409 rounds of ammunition.
Saturday’s attacks underscore the persistent threat Al-Shabaab poses to Kenya’s northeastern region, despite ongoing counter-terrorism efforts by both Kenyan and allied forces.
