Somaliland Leader Advocates for reunification with Somalia under Certain Conditions
MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Veteran Somaliland traditional leader Osman Aw Mohamud, known as Buurmadow, has proposed that Somaliland reconsider its stance on reunification with Somalia under certain conditions.
Buurmadow believes that reunification would be more advantageous than pursuing international recognition if the settlement designates Hargeisa as the national capital, allows the Somali flag to fly over the city, and establishes a single national government.
He urges Somaliland’s leadership to open negotiations with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, claiming that this administration presents the best opportunity in years for a durable agreement between Hargeisa and Mogadishu.
Buurmadow’s proposal has sparked significant debate in both Somaliland and Somalia, as it deviates from Somaliland’s long-held pursuit of international recognition rather than reunification.
The comments have drawn attention to the ongoing debate about Somaliland’s future and its relationship with Somalia, which maintain differing positions on the region’s constitutional status. While Somaliland maintains its sovereignty, Somalia considers the region an integral part of its state.
