German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv by train on Sunday, calling on Vladimir Putin to end what he termed a 'senseless war' as Russian forces struck a city bridge. Merz, accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and arms industry leaders, pledged continued support as winter approaches.
Pledges of Support and New Aid Measures
Merz stated that 'Ukraine will need all our support in the coming weeks' as the fifth winter of war begins. He announced plans for a new raft of measures, including a further billion euros in military aid and €350 million for energy sector repairs. Additionally, the Chancellor is expected to unveil plans for the co-production of interceptor drones and long-range missiles in both Ukraine and Germany.
The visit marks the fourth time a German chancellor has traveled to Kyiv since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Merz, who first visited in May 2025 just four days after taking office, emphasized that 'If we in Germany waver, Europe wavers. And if Europe wavers, Ukraine wavers.' He also addressed domestic political divisions, promising that Germany would not be divided by critics of the conflict.
Escalating Attacks and Diplomatic Warnings
The Chancellor's arrival coincided with intensified Russian attacks. Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed that a bridge had been hit by a Russian drone, noting the 'Impact on the road surface of the Northern Bridge.' President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assaults, labeling the attackers 'absolute barbarians' and stating, 'It is vital that Ukraine is not left alone in the face of this terror.'
In response to the strikes, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned foreign diplomats to avoid the capital, claiming their actions were responses to 'terrorist acts by the Ukrainian armed forces against our country's civilian infrastructure.' Despite the danger, Merz insisted that 'If Russia is not stopped, it will turn its war machine against us sooner or later,' urging Putin to stop the 'barbaric attacks' on civilians.
