Funding Collapse and Leadership Resignation
MCC Brussels was founded in 2022 with a pledge to shake up European debate, but its financial lifeline has been severed. The organisation was largely financed through dividends from shares donated by the Hungarian government, which have now dried up following a change in leadership in Budapest.
Frank Furedi stepped down as director on Monday after the Mathias Corvinus Collegium failed to provide further funding. He described the situation as unprofessional and childish, and stated that in its present form, he believes the think tank is finished.
Hungary's New Government and Staff Demands
Incoming Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar vowed to dismantle Orbán's political ecosystem and nationalised the assets of the foundation that runs MCC. He stated that they have given Hungarians back the right to control those common assets and will end a system where public assets became the spoils of politics.
Furedi is now calling for outstanding salaries and severance payments to be paid to MCC Brussels staff, arguing that a professional government would honour existing contracts. He is also working on a new initiative with a smaller team and alternative funding, including fundraising.
Operational Challenges and Controversy
At its peak, MCC Brussels employed 25 people, a figure that had fallen to 12 by this year. The think tank had a budget of around €5 million last year and frequently criticised the European Union for a lack of transparency and for being ideologically driven.
Events organised by MCC Brussels were frequently targeted by Brussels' Antifa movement, which accused the think tank of promoting far-right narratives. In June, the EU Transparency Register suspended the organisation's registration, preventing it from engaging in lobbying activities and meeting with EU officials.
