Hurricane Nolo was approximately 365 miles south-south-west of Honolulu on Sunday, drifting away from the Big Island at 12mph while its maximum sustained winds climbed to 115mph. The US National Hurricane Center said the storm's center would remain well south and south-west of the islands, though it was expected to strengthen further and turn north-west by Sunday night.
Forecasters warned that Nolo's outer bands could bring up to 20in of rain to parts of the Big Island, creating life-threatening flooding and mudslides. Heavy rain already fell across the southern part of the island on Saturday, prompting partial closures of a main highway linking Kailua-Kona to Hilo.

More than 120 National Guard members were activated on the Big Island, part of roughly 400 statewide after the governor issued an emergency proclamation. Hurricane Polo remained a dangerous category 3 hurricane with top sustained winds of 125mph, moving to the north-north-west at 12mph about 275 miles south-south-west of Cabo San Lucas. Mexico's National Meteorological Service said in a post on X that Polo was expected to make a Baja landfall on Monday.
The Mexican navy gathered personnel and humanitarian aid in the ports of Guaymas and Mazatlan, deploying three vessels to reach coastal communities isolated by the storm. In San Juanico, a small fishing community, the Mexican Army arrived to prepare a shelter, while concerns grew that washed-out roads could block access to the nearest medical facility, about 80 minutes away.
