More than 25,000 people have been deported by the Trump administration to countries that are not their own, in a policy that human rights lawyers describe as a show of force designed to deter migrants from seeking asylum in the United States.
A Record of Third-Country Removals
The pace of deportations to foreign countries has accelerated sharply, with a record 16 flights carrying people to 13 different nations in August alone, according to a count by Human Rights First. About 20,000 individuals have been bussed to Mexico, while more than 5,000 others have been placed on flights to countries in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and central Asia to which they have no connection.
The Trump administration has stated that the people it deports are criminals, yet documents obtained by the Washington Post as part of a joint investigation show that a majority of the 35 countries that have signed deals with the US have said they will not accept migrants with violent criminal records.
The Deportation Project Exposes the Scale
The Guardian joined 23 other media organisations in the Deportation Project, a joint investigation coordinated by Paris-based Forbidden Stories. The consortium interviewed more than 100 people affected by, or involved in, the US drive to extinguish unauthorised immigration, and has tracked more than 100 flights that have carried migrants and asylum seekers to 28 different countries.
The drive for third-country removals is being led by Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff, while Christian Ehrhardt, a career state department official, heads the newly formed Office of Remigration. The consortium reviewed documents outlining details of the agreements made by US officials with governments around the world.
Individual Stories of Displacement
Nika, a 32-year-old Iranian woman, was deported to the Central African Republic after being granted legal protections and freed on a judge's orders. Within two weeks of being freed, she was rearrested by the Department of Homeland Security and deported to CAR, a country the Department of State warns US citizens not to travel to because it is too dangerous.
Rabbiatu Kuyateh, 58, was sent to Ghana, which was deporting her to her childhood homeland, Sierra Leone. She was a nurse who had spent most of her life in the US with her parents, after fleeing Sierra Leone.
