Flight FZ1073, operating from Dubai to Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, transmitted an emergency alert two and a half hours after take-off before sending a second signal indicating possible unlawful interference. The aircraft then diverted through Jordanian airspace toward Saudi Arabia, ultimately landing at Tabuk, a dual civilian and military base in the kingdom's north-west.
The Boeing 737's emergency transmissions followed a period of turbulence and raised immediate concerns about the safety of the flight, with authorities treating the situation as a potential hijacking until further information became available.
Cockpit Fight and Passenger Accounts
A regional official briefed on the incident said a fight broke out in the cockpit and apparently involved pilots, though it was not immediately clear what had caused the altercation or whether either pilot had intentionally transmitted the emergency signal. Passengers told Israel's Channel 12 that they heard shouts and screams, and one woman reported that a man had taken a knife and put a pilot on the floor, with blood visible.
Passengers said they remained on board and were surrounded by Saudi security forces after the aircraft came to a halt. The carrier, flydubai, confirmed the plane had landed safely in Tabuk and said its teams were working closely with relevant authorities while further updates would be issued as details became available.
Israeli Response and Diplomatic Efforts
Israel scrambled warplanes fearing a hijacking of a plane carrying dozens of its citizens, while Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir held a situational assessment with the commander of the air force and other military officials. Three Israeli security officials told Reuters that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held consultations over the flight, reflecting the gravity of the situation.
Mr Netanyahu's office later said the situation was under control and that Israel was working to bring the passengers home. The daily Dubai-Tel Aviv route, operated by flydubai since the two countries normalised relations in 2020, has become popular among Israeli nationals, making the incident particularly sensitive.
