Tehran sets conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz as an aide continues consultations in Qatar, the foreign minister tells Al Jazeera.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described a United States effort to open dialogue with Tehran as "a positive step", while saying there are currently no plans for meetings with US officials over the eight-month-old war, Al Jazeera reported.
Araghchi says US letter studied, but no meetings planned
Araghchi said Iran had studied a letter sent by US Vice President JD Vance in high-level meetings. "The American side's attempt to open the door to dialogue and understanding more broadly is a positive step," he said, while warning that if Washington's aim was to stir up discord, it would be "yet another mistake to add to its previous ones." He dismissed talk of upcoming meetings as "merely media speculation".
Conditions set out for reopening the Strait of Hormuz
Araghchi said talks with Qatari mediators had shortened the time needed to implement Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, with the implementation period reduced to two days. He said Iran's conditions include lifting sanctions imposed after the Islamabad memorandum, reducing US forces in the region, restoring oil waivers and releasing all frozen funds, including those held in Qatar.
Delegation in Doha as Iran says it is prepared for all scenarios
Araghchi said an Iranian delegation had travelled to Doha, a day after Qatari mediators were in Tehran, and that one of his aides is in Qatar to continue consultations. He said Iran does not rule out an attack against it and is "prepared for all scenarios". Major-General Ali Abdollahi, Iran's armed forces chief of staff, said Iran would respond to any attack with "immense force".
