Left-hander Max Fried, 32, is scheduled to start Game 2 on Wednesday against Boston. Fried posted a 2.80 ERA in 20 starts this season but missed more than two months earlier in the year due to a bone bruise in his left elbow. He will take the mound on seven days' rest following his final regular-season appearance on September 22.
Gerrit Cole is penciled in for Game 3 if the series extends to a fourth game, also in New York on Thursday. Having Schlittler open the series projects him to start Games 1 and 4 of the potential best-of-five division series against the Tampa Bay Rays on regular rest, providing the Yankees with a consistent rotation plan.
