MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia and Pakistan have signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen cooperation in defence, security and military capacity building, Somalia’s Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday.

The agreement was signed in Islamabad by Somalia’s Defence Minister, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, and his Pakistani counterpart, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, according to a ministry statement.
Under the memorandum, the two countries will cooperate on counterterrorism operations, military training programmes, and the exchange of military expertise, the statement said. It also provides a framework for broader defence capacity building between the two nations’ armed forces.
The Somali ministry described the pact as a reflection of the two countries’ commitment to strengthening their strategic relationship, and said it lays the groundwork for closer collaboration between their respective militaries in the years ahead.

The signing comes as Somalia continues to widen its network of defence partnerships with regional and international allies, part of a broader push to rebuild security institutions weakened by more than three decades of conflict. Somali forces remain engaged in a protracted fight against Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda-linked insurgency that continues to hold territory in parts of the country and stage attacks on government and civilian targets.
