Cricket World Cup Format Gets Major Revamp!

New Structures Unveiled for 2027 & 2028 Tournaments

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced significant changes to the formats of both the 2027 ODI World Cup and the 2028 T20 World Cup. These changes are designed to “elevate competitiveness and consequence” of these global events.

Changes for the 2027 ODI World Cup:

– The 14-team tournament will feature a new ‘Super Series’ round for the three lowest-ranked teams.
– Only the top team from the Super Series advances to the main 12-team group phase.
– The top three teams from each main group, plus the next best-placed team across both groups, qualify for the new ‘Super 7’ round.
– The two teams that emerge from the Super 7 round advance to the semi-finals.

Enhanced Competitive Intensity:

“The structure has been designed to strengthen the competitive narrative across every stage of the event,” said the ICC. “Matches from Round 1 and Round 2 carry higher consequence with a highly competitive Super 7 stage witnessing 7 qualifying teams going through a round-robin stage to qualify for the semi-finals.”

Impact on India-Pakistan Clash:

This change increases the chances of an additional clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, a highly lucrative fixture that has been hampered by political tensions between their boards.

Changes for the 2028 T20 World Cup:

– The number of teams in the second stage increases from 8 to 10, now called the ‘Super 10’.
– The top team from each group advances directly to the semi-finals.
– Second-placed teams play ‘Eliminator’ matches against third-placed teams from the other group to determine the remaining two semifinalists.

Increased Representation for Emerging Nations:

“The addition of ‘eliminators’ where the second and third ranked teams from groups in the Super 10 stage compete against each other for spots in the semi-finals also then adds significant consequence to the closing matches of the Super 10 stage,” the ICC stated.
