Bloomberg reported that the shipment was unexpectedly diverted to Hong Kong while en route from Australia to the United States for either repair or disposal. Australia Acknowledges the Incident
Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles acknowledged that the jet components ended up in Hong Kong when responding to reporters. He denied that the missing parts were sensitive equipment, stating there is a sense of comfort and that the issue will be managed by the United States and Lockheed Martin.
Marles emphasized that Australia is working with the United States and its prime contractor Lockheed Martin in respect of the matter. He added that ultimately, the United States and Lockheed will handle what has occurred, reflecting confidence in the ongoing response.
F-35 Technology and Broader Context
The F-35 is widely recognized as America's best and most advanced fighter jet, featuring stealth coatings, advanced radar, sensors, and networking capabilities to communicate with allied forces during combat. More than 1,200 of the stealth jets have been made, with 19 countries placing orders for the planes since its assembly line debut in Texas about 20 years ago.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived in Washington for a state visit with President Donald Trump as the incident unfolded.
