Sen. Roger Wicker, chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, took to the Senate floor to suggest that Xi should not have been invited to Washington at all. He stated that had the White House asked for his advice, he would have recommended against the lavish welcome given the troubling issues with the Chinese leadership.
During the state dinner, Wicker urged the president to raise concerns about the Chinese Navy's harassment of Filipino fishermen and the issue of Taiwan, while warning that Xi is a dictator whose military arsenal is aimed directly at the United States.
Republicans Push for Taiwan Arms Sales
Sen. Mitch McConnell and three other Republican senators used the visit to pressure the Trump administration to proceed with aid and arms sales to Taiwan, citing previous statements from Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on deterring invasion.
They noted that China had pressed Washington to halt these sales, most prominently during a May summit in Beijing, after which the United States paused a record-breaking $14 billion package, which Trump described as a negotiating chip.
Democrats Warn on Chips and Iran
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and three other Democrats held a press conference to warn against weakening export controls on advanced semiconductor chips, arguing that restricting China's access is essential to maintaining U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence.
Meanwhile, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen urged Trump to confront Xi directly about China's support for Iran, stating that cutting off outside support is the first step to ending the war and protecting U.S. service members in the Middle East.
