India's activist group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) launched a school audit campaign on August 15, 2025, asking parents and volunteers to inspect government schools and document their conditions. The initiative follows weeks of protests that forced the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in July 2025.
A New Campaign for Accountability
The CJP, which rose to national prominence in May 2025 over a scandal involving competitive entrance exams, has now turned its focus to India's government schools. The campaign, launched on India's Independence Day, invites parents, students, and volunteers to inspect schools and record basic facilities such as toilets, drinking water, electricity, and classroom furniture.
The initial target is to audit 100 rural government schools over two months. Unlike the earlier street protests, this campaign requires sustained local activism, with volunteers expected to work consistently at the grassroots level, document conditions, and follow up with officials and communities.
State Governments Push Back
Authorities in Maharashtra and Rajasthan have objected to school visits carried out without permission. In Rajasthan, restrictions have been imposed on outsiders entering government schools, as well as on filming, interviews, and other forms of documentation. CJP volunteers in Rajasthan have reported being attacked while inspecting a school.
In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered officials to conduct on-the-spot checks of school facilities and directed police to register cases over what he called misleading videos about schools and colleges. The CJP says such measures undermine public scrutiny.
A Debate Over Methods and Rights
Critics question whether citizen activists can assume the role of inspectors. Mohandas Pai, an education advocate, supports the CJP's focus on government schools but disagrees with its methods, objecting to large groups entering schools and questioning headmasters and children.
CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka stated: 'We are not afraid. We are seeking accountability from the government.' Meanwhile, activist Amrita Johri backed the school audit campaign, saying public scrutiny should be welcomed and that public audits are an integral part of citizens' right to information.
