Somalia-Uganda Relations Under Strain: Presidential Visit Plans Scrapped?

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s attempts to secure an official visit by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Uganda during his recent regional diplomatic tour have reportedly hit a snag, with sources close to the matter citing a significant decline in relations between the two leaders.

Tensions Emerge After Meeting

The alleged rift began following a meeting on May 10 between the two presidents. During the discussions, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni reportedly suggested that President Hassan open dialogue with Somalia’s opposition and assist in facilitating an electoral understanding ahead of the country’s upcoming political transition.

Somali Delegation Rejects Proposal

Sources within Villa Somalia claim that the Somali federal delegation dismissed Museveni’s proposal, leading to visible anger from the Ugandan president and his son, who accompanied him during the meeting.

Efforts to Mend Fences

Following the encounter, two of President Hassan’s closest advisers and a senior federal minister have reportedly been working to repair the damaged relations. However, these efforts have not yielded any significant results thus far.

Silence from Both Governments

Neither Villa Somalia nor the Ugandan government has officially commented on the reported attempt to arrange the president’s visit or the alleged disagreement between the two leaders.
