Cricket World Cup Gets Major Format Overhaul!

New Structures Unveiled for 2027 and 2028 Editions

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced significant format changes for the next editions of the Cricket World Cup (50-over) and the T20 World Cup. These changes aim to boost competitiveness and consequence at these prestigious events.

World Cup ODI Changes

The 2027 Cricket World Cup will feature 14 teams, with three bottom-ranked sides facing off in a new ‘Super Series’ round. Only the top team from this round will advance to the main 12-team group phase.

The top three teams from each main group, along with the best-placed team across both groups, will qualify for the new ‘Super 7’ round. The two surviving teams from this stage will reach the semi-finals.

Increased Competitive Intensity

“The structure has been designed to strengthen the competitive narrative across every stage of the event,” said the ICC. “Matches from Round 1 and Round 2 carry higher consequence with a highly competitive Super 7 stage witnessing 7 qualifying teams going through a round-robin stage to qualify for the semi-finals.”

T20 World Cup Modifications

The 2028 T20 World Cup will see increased participation in the second stage, with 10 teams instead of eight. Additionally, the ‘Super 10’ round will be renamed to reflect the expanded field.

The top team from each group will qualify directly for the semi-finals, while the second-placed teams will play ‘Eliminator’ matches against the third-placed teams from the opposite group to determine the remaining two semifinalists.

Additional Modifications and Future Plans

Scotland has been notified that they must compete in the European qualifying tournament for the next World Cup. The ICC has also recommended the introduction of a ‘marquee’ event for associate nations, but this proposal awaits final approval in November.
