UK Medical Professionals Demand Release of Tortured Palestinian Doctor
More than 800 doctors, nurses and medical professionals in the UK have signed an open letter to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, calling for her urgent intervention to secure the release of Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian paediatrician and director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital.
Abu Safiya has been held in Israeli captivity for over 550 days without charge or trial, after being abducted on 27 December 2024. During his captivity, he has been subjected to extensive bruising and marks of torture, leaving him weak and barely recognisable.
The letter, coordinated by Amnesty International UK and NHS campaign group Health Workers 4 Palestine, urges Cooper to publicly demand Abu Safiya’s immediate release and utilise all available tools to secure his freedom.
