Argentina Coach Responds to World Cup Criticism Ahead of England Semifinal
Atlanta – Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has defended his team’s performances during the FIFA World Cup, claiming they have done enough to reach the semifinal against England on Wednesday.
“The team isn’t playing as bad as people say,” Scaloni said on Tuesday.
Throughout the tournament, Argentina have topped Group J, eliminated Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland, but needed extra time to overcome Cape Verde and Switzerland, and staged a remarkable comeback against Egypt in the round of 16.
Scaloni acknowledged that the team’s style of play might not be to everyone’s liking, but emphasized their progress in reaching the semifinal.
“I don’t dwell on whether we’re playing exactly how I wanted. Getting to the semifinal is an incredible achievement.”
The clash with England marks the fourth consecutive semifinal appearance for Argentina, following their triumphs in 2014, 2018 and 2022.
When asked about the political tension between Argentina and England, Scaloni expressed his desire to focus solely on the sporting aspect of the match.
“This is a football match. We cannot mix politics with the game.”
The winner of the semifinal will face Spain in the World Cup final on July 19 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
