Exit polls show the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) won Saxony-Anhalt's state election with 44.5% of the vote, putting it on track to form a new government. The ruling CDU suffered its worst result since reunification, while the Greens and BSW also made significant gains.
AfD Secures Historic Victory in Saxony-Anhalt
The AfD's lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund declared the result a historic milestone, saying, 'We've made history, we need to say this clearly.' Co-leader Tino Chrupalla added that the party had 'halved the CDU,' calling the outcome 'sensational.'
AfD co-leader Alice Weidel described the result as 'historic,' noting that while the party won the lion's share of votes, it remains uncertain whether that is enough to secure full control of the state government.
Coalition Talks and Political Fallout
The AfD is projected to win 39 seats, three short of an absolute majority, while the CDU is expected to take 16 seats. CDU Secretary-General Franziska Hoppermann ruled out any cooperation with the AfD, stating, 'We will not work with radicals, especially not with right-wing radicals.'
The BSW signaled openness to working with the AfD on individual policy issues, with lead candidate Claudia Wittig saying, 'We will always decide on the substance.' Meanwhile, the Left Party's Heidi Reichinnek firmly rejected any cooperation, calling the AfD a 'right-wing extremist' party.
Broader Implications for German Politics
Germany's domestic intelligence agency has classified the AfD chapter led by Siegmund as 'right-wing extremist,' citing links to ethno-nationalist groups. The German Economic Institute warned that the AfD's immigration policy would be 'ruinous' for Saxony-Anhalt.
Thuringia's interior minister Georg Maier told Handelsblatt that the Kremlin 'makes no secret of the fact that the AfD is the most important instrument for destabilising Germany for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin.' The Greens also celebrated their best-ever result in the state, reaching 8.9%.
