Secretary-General Jassem Mohamed Albudaiwi of the Gulf Cooperation Council said the high-level general debate at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly is a vital international occasion for bridging differences and building consensus on pressing global challenges.
GCC Leader Emphasises Dialogue and Diplomacy
Speaking at the opening of the high-level general debate on Tuesday, Albudaiwi said the current period of rapid change places greater responsibility on the international community to prioritise dialogue and diplomacy. He stressed that multilateral diplomacy must remain the primary means of addressing regional and international challenges.
The remarks came as several world leaders, heads of government and senior officials gathered on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York on September 22, 2026.
GCC Stands for Sovereignty and Political Solutions
Albudaiwi outlined the Gulf states' consistent approach to regional and international issues, which rests on respecting the sovereignty and independence of states and noninterference in their internal affairs. He said the GCC relies on dialogue and political solutions to resolve disputes.
He added that lasting security and stability can only be achieved through cooperation, shared responsibility and adherence to the rules of international legitimacy, in line with the principles of the UN Charter.
GCC Seeks Broader Coordination at the General Assembly
The GCC Secretary-General said the Gulf countries' participation in the General Assembly's work, along with high-level meetings and discussions held on its sidelines, provides an important opportunity to exchange views with international partners. He noted that such engagement serves shared interests and contributes to advancing peace, stability, development and prosperity regionally and internationally.
The high-level general debate, which brings together leaders and representatives from countries around the world, is seen as an important international occasion for opening broader avenues for joint action on the issues and challenges facing the international community.
