German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov at the UN General Assembly in New York, a rare diplomatic engagement that followed Wadephul's speech calling for global AI regulation and UN reform.
Rare Berlin-Moscow Diplomatic Contact
Wadephul and Lavrov met at the German initiative, with the Russian Foreign Ministry confirming the encounter took place before the press was asked to leave. The last such meeting occurred in January 2022 between Lavrov and then-Germany's Annalena Baerbock, before tensions escalated following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The meeting comes as relations between Berlin and Moscow remain strained, with Germany accusing Russia of orchestrating an attempted drone attack on Leipzig airport and each country subsequently closing the other's consulate.
Wadephul Urges AI Regulation and UN Reform
Opening his UNGA address, Wadephul warned that artificial intelligence holds extraordinary power and called for global safety standards. He stated that AI is not waiting for institutions to catch up, and urged member states to work toward common requirements for the most capable models.
He also warned of a UN under pressure from great powers that ignore the UN Charter, calling for a profound reform process. Wadephul emphasized that the overwhelming majority of the 193 states represented are harmed when international institutions are under attack.
Gulf Crisis and Global Security Tensions
India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar urged deescalation in the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea crises, while Saudi Arabia's FM Prince Faisal bin Farhan al Saud called for restoring the Strait to its pre-February 28 status after US and Israeli military operations against Iran began that date.
Russia's Lavrov offered to help stabilize the Gulf region, while China's Vice President Han Zheng condemned unilateral military actions violating the UN Charter. Lavrov also accused European countries of thwarting peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
