French investigative outlet Mediapart has released new screenshots of Facebook Messenger exchanges from 2013 and 2014 attributed to Jordan Bardella, the leader of the National Rally. The authenticity of the material was verified through a court-certified data extraction provided by Meta, according to the outlet's co-founder Edwy Plenel.
Verification and Sources
The investigation, which spanned several months, relied on dozens of written conversations and interviews with 18 individuals. The exchanges from 2013 and 2014 were forwarded to Mediapart by two separate sources, both drawn from Jordan Bardella's entourage, and the outlet confirmed the two sources are entirely independent of one another.
Edwy Plenel, co-founder of Mediapart, explained on Twitter that the authenticity of the screenshots was established through a data extraction supplied by Meta and certified by a court bailiff, lending significant weight to the published material.
Bardella's Response and Legal Action
Jordan Bardella has denied from the very start of the affair that he is the author of these messages. On X, he denounced the material as 'crude fakes' and described it as part of an operation designed to destabilise the presidential campaign. He has also filed a defamation complaint against Mediapart following the publication of the initial investigation.
Within the National Rally, several senior figures have come out in support of Bardella, rejecting the accusations made against him by the investigative outlet.
Broader Political Reactions
Beyond the far right, reactions have been more critical. On Wednesday, President Emmanuel Macron described the remarks attributed to Bardella as 'extremely serious and unacceptable', calling on the National Rally to clarify the situation.
The incident has drawn attention to the broader implications of antisemitic rhetoric in French politics ahead of the presidential campaign.
