Ukraine has officially notified the International Civil Aviation Organization that Russian airspace is no longer safe for civilian aviation, citing a sharp rise in military drone activity. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed the formal notification on Wednesday, urging all airlines and governments to avoid the airspace entirely.
Ukraine urges global airlines to avoid Russian skies
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Ukraine has formally notified ICAO that Russian airspace is not safe for civilian aviation because of increased military activity. He urged everyone to avoid it and called the decision a responsible move to prevent unintended incidents. "We want to prevent unintended incidents," Sybiha said on X.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned airlines, insurers, and businesses using Russian main airports that Russian skies are becoming completely dangerous. He insisted Ukraine does not threaten civilian aviation but said the growing scale of drone operations inside Russia means the risks can no longer be ignored. "The safe days in Russia's skies are over," Zelenskyy said.
Flights disrupted as airlines react to warnings
Pegasus Airlines cancelled 12 flights to and from Moscow's Vnukovo Airport overnight on Wednesday, and a flight from Antalya to Moscow was diverted due to security concerns. Turkish Airlines mostly kept its Moscow services running but cancelled two departures and two arrivals from and to Istanbul.
European and US carriers stopped flying over Russia following Moscow's full-scale invasion in 2022, but major airlines including Emirates, Air India, Etihad, and Qatar Airways continue to fly to or through the country. Russia's aviation watchdog regularly closes airports in response to Ukrainian drones.
Russia strikes Ukraine while Kyiv warns of drone surge
Russian drones hit central Kyiv for a seventh day in a row on Wednesday, injuring seven people and damaging residential and university buildings. Russia also struck electricity facilities in the southern Odesa region, knocking out power to more than 350,000 homes, and two people were killed and eight wounded in strikes on Dnipro.
Ukrainian drone attacks on Wednesday killed two people in Russia's Belgorod border region and wounded 16 more. Ukraine and Germany are close to finalizing a drone deal involving the joint development of several types of drones, missiles, and related software.
