Poland has stepped up its air defence posture after repeated alleged incursions into its airspace in recent weeks, prompting preventive patrols and a warning from its leadership that Moscow is testing NATO resolve.
Poland Launches Preventive Patrols and Warns of Hybrid Threats
Poland's Air Force launched preventive air patrols on September 17 to secure its eastern airspace, following repeated alleged incursions in recent weeks. Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz announced the decision to expand protection, including increased activity of F-16 aircraft and helicopters. He stated: 'Following the latest Russian provocations and acts of aggression, I have made the decision to expand the protection of our airspace.'
Prime Minister Donald Tusk issued a political warning, telling parliament that intelligence indicated Russia planned hybrid drone and missile strikes against countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland. He said: 'According to intelligence, the Russian plan also includes hybrid drone and missile strikes against countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland.' He added that the aim of the incursions was 'to weaken the motivation of NATO countries to apply NATO regulations in the event of aggression against any member state'.
Recent Incursions and Broader NATO Tensions
On September 23, Poland reported that an Mi-8 helicopter entered its airspace from Kaliningrad for 42 seconds, with the Armed Forces Operational Command saying: 'Russia is once again testing the readiness of our air defence.' The most serious claim was a Russian Su-24 reconnaissance aircraft in the Baltic Sea in February 2025, an incident Russia reportedly acknowledged. During the past week, suspected Russian drones were shot down twice in Moldova and once in Romania on September 24.
Czech intelligence chief Michal Koudelka told The Guardian that a Russian attack, which could involve a limited incursion, false-flag provocations, or a massive influence campaign, might come in a matter of months, not years. Poland and Romania are NATO members bordering Ukraine through which military supplies have reached Kyiv, while Hungary has not allowed such transit.
Russia's War Claims and Ukrainian Counteroffensives
Russia's Ministry of Defence claimed on September 19 that its forces had seized 5,300 square kilometres and more than 220 settlements in Ukraine since the start of 2026. However, the Institute for the Study of War estimates Russia captured only 147.7sq km in the first eight months, while Ukrainian forces liberated at least 972.56sq km. The Lyman operation, codenamed Vivaldi, saw 50sq km liberated in its second phase.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the United Nations General Assembly that Russia has used more than 2,100 missiles and launched 63,000 drones against Ukraine since the beginning of 2026. Moscow launched drone and missile strikes every night of the week, killing at least eight people, including a cleric in Kherson and two in Kyiv. Meanwhile, Ukraine struck Russian refineries in Samara and Bashkortostan.
