Speaking at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, Pope Leo said the UN and other multilateral groups are experiencing a crisis of effectiveness. He argued that dialogue is increasingly seen as an obstacle to action rather than a resource for peace.
The pontiff warned that those in power invoke the law when it serves their interests and disregard it when it restrains them, treating even justice itself as though it were a commodity to be bought and sold.
AI Threatens Humanity Amid 'Paradise of Machines'
Pope Leo placed artificial intelligence at the heart of his visit, warning that it could create a future where a paradise of machines takes control of the Earth. He called for urgent education in ethical discernment to avoid losing humanity amid AI.
The pope, who has made sounding the alarm about AI risks a central part of his 16-month papacy, urged the world to reconsider the development of artificial intelligence during a speech to French leaders.
France Welcomes First US Pope on Historic Visit
Pope Leo was greeted at Paris Orly airport by President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte, and will lead a prayer service at the restored Notre-Dame cathedral. He is on a three-city visit to France, including Lourdes and Metz.
The visit comes as local church leaders hope to repair the Church's standing after a 2021 report found that some 330,000 French children had been abused by Catholic clergy over seven decades. The pope will meet seven abuse victims in Lourdes.
