French President Emmanuel Macron and Pope Leo XIV held their first meeting at the Élysée Palace on Thursday, exchanging sharply different views on secularism, artificial intelligence and the sanctity of life while agreeing that climate change and AI are among the defining challenges of our time.
Divergent Views on Secularism and the Role of Religion
President Macron framed French secularism as a guarantee of freedom of conscience and a space where everyone can express themselves, rather than a wall separating society from faith. The Pope pushed back, arguing that true secularism does not consist in excluding religion from the public space, and that the presence of religious convictions in public life is compatible with a secular order.
The disagreement surfaced most sharply over bioethics. Pope Leo XIV slammed Paris' recently adopted and controversial assisted death bill, reaffirming his commitment to protecting every human life. He also opposed surrogacy, grounding his position in a broader defence of human dignity that runs through his entire address.
Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Human Dignity
Both leaders identified artificial intelligence as one of the major challenges of our time, with climate change also at the top of the global issues discussed during the pair's talks. The Pope warned against a technology liable to be used for purposes of surveillance, manipulation and discrimination, calling for technological progress to remain subject to human responsibility.
"The greater our power to transform the world, the greater must be our ability to discern what truly serves human dignity," he said, echoing a theme he had already developed in his address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences earlier on Thursday.
Peace, Multilateralism and the Pope's French Itinerary
On the international stage, Macron defended an engaged France standing for peace, multilateralism and respect for international law. He referred to the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East as central concerns of both Paris and the Vatican, adding that every life is worth the same and all peoples must be defended.
Pope Leo XIV assigned France a particular responsibility to remain a tireless artisan of peace and multilateralism, while challenging the idea that nuclear weapons constitute a security guarantee. After the Élysée meeting, the Pope visited UNESCO headquarters, celebrated vespers at Notre-Dame cathedral and will travel to Lourdes and Metz over the weekend.
