Captain Smit Machchhar has spoken publicly for the first time about being stabbed by his co-pilot on a FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, describing how he fought to survive and unlock the cockpit door so passengers could intervene.
The Attack and Cockpit Intervention
On a FlyDubai flight carrying approximately 180 passengers, mostly Israeli nationals, Captain Smit Machchhar was stabbed by his co-pilot, an Omani national, during the journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The aircraft was forced to divert to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after the attack. Machchhar, who sustained serious wounds and fell to the floor, managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing other passengers to enter and restrain the suspected attacker. A deadheading pilot then took control of the aircraft.
The incident has been officially labeled a terrorist attack by both the United Arab Emirates and Israel. The UAE described the event as an act of terrorism and an imminent catastrophe, while Israeli officials also characterized it in similar terms. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though Israel believes it was an attempted Islamist attack.
Captain's Heroic Stand and International Reactions
Speaking to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video call from his hospital bed in Abu Dhabi, Captain Machchhar recounted his ordeal, saying, 'I had so many wounds. I had fallen down.' He added, 'I was fighting for my life. At one point, I realized that if I didn't get up... then passengers would lose their lives.' His words have drawn widespread praise for his courage and quick thinking under extreme pressure.
UAE adviser Anwar Gargash called Machchhar a 'true hero' and said he deserved 'the highest recognition for embodying courage and responsibility in the face of a terrorist act and an imminent catastrophe.' FlyDubai CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith announced a full investigation into the incident and confirmed that flights to Tel Aviv would be suspended until at least October 15.
Aftermath and Ongoing Investigations
The suspected attacker was arrested upon landing in Saudi Arabia, while Israeli officials are expected to investigate the co-pilot, who is currently held in the UAE. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the country was looking into whether the co-pilot had been instructed by anyone, warning that 'whoever sent him will pay a very heavy price.' Many Israeli nationals were stranded in the UAE following the flight suspension, but Israeli airlines have since received approvals to begin repatriating passengers back to Israel.
FlyDubai has committed to conducting a thorough investigation to establish the facts surrounding the attack. The company emphasized the importance of allowing the process to unfold properly. As investigations continue, the international community remains closely watching the case, which has raised serious questions about aviation security and the potential for coordinated attacks on commercial flights.
