The USS Abraham Lincoln strike group reported eight suicide attempts during its record-setting deployment supporting operations against Iran, prompting a letter from the acting Navy secretary to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
Navy Confirms Suicide Attempts Amid Record Deployment
Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao confirmed to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand that eight sailors attempted suicide across the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group since the deployment began. The carrier left San Diego in November and arrived in the Middle East in January, spending more than 260 uninterrupted days at sea supporting operations against Iran.
The eight attempts involved crew members from the carrier, carrier wing, strike group and destroyer squadron staff, escorting destroyers, and all embarked aviation squadrons. Cao stated there have been no suicides on board during the deployment, though the strike group of approximately 6,000 sailors faced significant stress over the extended period.
Mental Health Resources and Supply Challenges
The carrier deployed with a psychologist, a clinical social worker, a counsellor, three behavioural health technicians and a therapy dog to support crew well-being. Cao acknowledged that combat operations limited resupply opportunities, reducing meal options from two to one for a short time, though four nutritionally balanced meals were served daily.
The Navy also faced delays in scheduled resupply shipments, piping failures early in the deployment and temporary issues with desalination units. Despite these challenges, the Navy prioritised the delivery of hygiene products and established a rotation to streamline distribution to different squadrons.
Political Backlash and Expert Analysis
Senator Gillibrand criticised President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who dismissed reports of deteriorating conditions as 'completely misrepresented'. Trump described the nearly nine months at sea as a 'good period of time', while Hegseth claimed conditions were 'completely misrepresented'.
Experts noted that eight attempts in a strike group of 6,000 sailors over 10 months is relatively low, with the Navy reporting 356 suicide attempts across the service in 2024 and more than 1,500 among all active-duty personnel. Doctor Harold Kudler called for a serious review of lessons learned to ensure future deployments are easier on service members and families.
