A coalition of seven armed groups, including the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), has launched a full-scale offensive against the Ethiopian federal government, declaring its intent to oust Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and establish an interim administration in northern Ethiopia.
Formation of the 'Save' Coalition
On Sunday evening, Zemene Kassie, head of the Amhara National Democratic Movement (AFABN), announced the creation of a coalition named 'Save' through a statement broadcast on Tigray media. The alliance unites seven armed factions, including the TPLF, AFABN, and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), and explicitly states its goal of removing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed from power and installing an interim government.
The coalition's leadership described the move as a 'new face of change,' asserting it would safeguard human rights and democratic freedoms for all Ethiopians without disruption. However, the Ethiopian government has dismissed the alliance, with Prime Minister Abiy's spokesperson Billene Seyoum telling Reuters that the groups receive support from Eritrea and that the declaration confirms long-standing accusations made by the federal state.
Escalation of Drone Strikes and Ground Combat
Tensions escalated sharply on Tuesday with coordinated drone and military aircraft strikes across the city of Alamata in Tigray. The mayor, Moges Shiferaw, told the BBC that at least 14 people were killed in the attacks, with many more injured. While the mayor stated all victims were civilians, three local residents interviewed by BBC Tigrinya reported seeing combatants among the casualties.
The conflict has since spread to the Amhara and Afar regions. Getachew Reda, former Tigray interim president and current PM's East Africa adviser, told the BBC that TPLF forces launched a 'full-scale attack' on areas in these regions. The Afar regional telecom office confirmed that fighting began on Monday night in the Kilbeti Rasu area, targeting Abaala, Megale, and Wosema.
International Reactions and Diplomatic Responses
The United States Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ervin Massinga, condemned the TPLF leadership for launching a 'broad attack,' while the African Union's chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed deep concern over the military tensions and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Meanwhile, Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie addressed the UN General Assembly in New York, asserting that Ethiopia has demonstrated strong self-governance despite external interference and has improved its relations with neighbouring countries.
The conflict has also disrupted civilian life significantly. Tigray's main airport, Alula Aba Nega in Mekelle, was seized by TPLF forces early Wednesday, prompting Ethiopian Airlines to suspend all flights to Tigray, Axum, and Shire. The airline cited the current situation as the reason for the suspension but did not specify when services would resume.
