A parliamentary inquiry into AI data centres in Tasmania has drawn 152 submissions, with experts urging binding conditions to ensure lasting public benefit beyond construction.
Firmus Leads Tasmania's Data Centre Push
Firmus Technologies is advancing three projects in Tasmania, including one under construction in Launceston, with approval for a second at Long Reach and a third sought at Wesley Vale. Once operational, these facilities would consume 444 megawatts of electricity, making them the state's largest power users.
The company's modelling projects a cumulative contribution to gross state product of $12.8 billion from the Launceston facility between 2026 and 2035, while supporting an average of approximately 1,360 jobs across direct, supply-chain and induced employment.
Caution Over Economic Benefits and Grid Risks
Dr Sue Keay of the University of New South Wales AI Institute warned that data centres do not, by themselves, build a local AI industry or deliver lasting community benefit, and recommended a levy on large-scale projects to fund research and talent.
The Tasmanian Policy Exchange cautioned that if the AI bubble bursts, Tasmania could be left paying for under-utilised infrastructure, while also noting that grid concentration risk could arise from heavy reliance on a small number of customers from a single industry.
Calls for Transparent Oversight and Binding Conditions
The Digital Infrastructure Institute identified gaps in Tasmania's planning system, recommending a single register reported to parliament each year covering energy and water allocations, actual consumption and compliance status.
Firmus said it supports consistent, transparent public reporting requirements for AI and data infrastructure, covering energy and water use, resource efficiency, environmental performance and delivery of community benefits.
