Somalia's Minister of Communications and Technology, H.E. Mohamed Adam Moallim, opened a Nairobi-based meeting to assess progress on the Eastern Africa Regional Digital Integration Project, bringing together World Bank officials, national regulators and federal member state representatives to discuss next steps for regional digital connectivity and broadband expansion.
Project Scope and Objectives
The Eastern Africa Regional Digital Integration Project is designed to advance digital connectivity, expand broadband infrastructure and facilitate data flows across East Africa. Its components include digital market integration, data infrastructure development, digital services and project implementation support.
The initiative represents a coordinated effort to strengthen digital integration across the region, with Somalia's Ministry of Communications and Technology playing a central role in coordinating national-level activities and ensuring alignment with broader regional goals.
Minister's Opening Remarks
In his opening remarks, H.E. Mohamed Somali acknowledged that the project had gone through challenging periods and stages but was now progressing in line with its plans and objectives. He emphasised that the Federal Government is prioritising efforts to accelerate the project and is prepared to commit time, effort and expertise to maximise the opportunities it creates for Somalia.
The Minister's comments reflected a commitment to overcoming past obstacles and ensuring that the project delivers tangible benefits to Somalia's digital economy and infrastructure development.
International Support and Collaboration
World Bank officials commended the Minister's leadership and highlighted his focus on accelerating the project's implementation and ensuring it progresses as planned. The meeting brought together officials and experts from the World Bank, the National Communications Authority, the Data Protection Authority and the Project Implementation Unit alongside representatives of Somalia's Federal Member States.
