Pope Leo told reporters on Monday that fears about artificial intelligence turning rogue are not 'fake news' and must be treated with the gravity experts demand, as he returned to Rome after a four-day visit to France.
Pope Leo Defends AI Safety Concerns
During a news conference aboard his flight back to Rome, the pontiff was asked what the United States and China should do to prevent AI from posing catastrophic risks to humanity. He responded that the concerns raised by specialists in the field should be taken seriously and are not fabricated. He added that he does not believe these warnings constitute fake news, as some commentators have suggested.
Leo, who has warned of the dangers of AI throughout his 16-month papacy, said he had read on Monday that Nvidia chief Jensen Huang had announced a possible way to insert guardrails into certain AI models. However, the pope expressed scepticism, noting that Huang is the same executive who argues there should be no limits placed on the technology and no government regulation.
Vatican Takes Unusual Stand on Technology
The Vatican has stepped up its rhetoric and initiatives in support of international AI governance in recent months, particularly in the fields of nuclear technology, culture and artistic creation. Leo identified AI as one of the biggest challenges to humanity within days of his election and took the unusual step of personally launching his own encyclical alongside Anthropic cofounder Christopher Olah at a Vatican event in May.
This initiative was part of the Vatican's effort to engage Silicon Valley about the human costs of AI. The pope directly criticised technology CEOs who argued there should be no guardrails on the technology, calling out their stance as inconsistent with the need for safety measures.
Call for Global Cooperation on AI
Leo urged the world to promote dialogue, study and investigation to find ways to make sure that AI does not get to a point where it could destroy humanity. He said he needs to continue to invite political leaders, leaders of AI, social organisations and associations to come together and look at what is happening already and what could be down the road.
The pope acknowledged that there are enough people seriously interested in the issue, but insisted that the work must continue. He warned that the global community cannot just sit back and pretend nothing is going to happen, calling for sustained effort to address the growing risks.
