Trump Compares AI Fears to Climate Change and Russia Hoax
Trump dismissed concerns about AI's pace, likening them to issues he has previously called hoaxes, including climate change and the Russia investigation into his 2016 campaign. He told reporters, 'When they wanna put on brakes, it's just like everybody's going to be dead. You're all supposed to be dead now, because of global warming. It's like Russia, Russia, Russia hoax. All of these different hoaxes.'
The president argued that slowing AI would halt American progress, asserting that the United States is far ahead of China in the field. He stated, 'What they wanna do is stop our progress, because we're leading China by a lot,' and added, 'And we're going to keep it that way.' His comments drew sharp criticism from Washington and around the world.
No Breakthrough on AI at Trump-Xi Summit
US lawmakers and experts had hoped the three-day summit between Trump and Xi Jinping would produce a breakthrough agreement on AI governance, but that did not materialise. Trump said, 'We didn't spend that much time talking about it,' indicating limited focus on the issue during their discussions. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged world leaders to enact guardrails on AI, warning that unchecked development 'without accountability' could put the world at risk.
Despite the lack of a major deal, the White House announced on Friday that the United States and China agreed to establish a 'bilateral communication channel' for AI-related incidents. There was no immediate comment from Beijing on the statement. Trump also indicated that conversations with Xi largely centred on his preferred term for the technology: 'super intelligence'.
China Respects US Renaming of AI as 'Super Intelligence'
On Tuesday, Trump announced that his administration would rename artificial intelligence as 'super intelligence,' or SI, in official communications. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded on Saturday, saying China 'respects' Washington's switch in phrasing. A statement from an unidentified Chinese ministry spokesperson noted that 'Artificial intelligence technologies are continuously developing, all parties can strengthen exchanges, discuss in-depth and seek consensus in light of the latest situation.'
Xi Jinping has adopted a more measured tone than Trump regarding AI, emphasising that the technology must develop under human control. While Trump rejected cooperation with China on the issue, saying, 'I would rather not integrate, because we're leading by a lot,' Xi's approach reflects a willingness to engage while maintaining oversight. The two leaders are set to meet again two more times this year.
