A 41-year-old Massachusetts man has been arrested in a federal cyberstalking case targeting conservative podcaster and former Trump administration official Katie Miller, with authorities alleging dozens of menacing contacts over several weeks.
The Arrest and Charges
John Anthony Proia III, 41, was taken into custody Thursday in a federal case alleging he cyberstalked Katie Miller, a conservative podcaster and former Trump administration official. Court documents indicate the suspect contacted Miller at least 40 times over several weeks, leaving disturbing voicemails and text messages about her and her husband, Stephen Miller, who serves as White House deputy chief of staff.
Prosecutors also say Proia sent messages to phone numbers belonging to Miller's parents. He faces one count of cyberstalking, and his attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday.
Victim Identity and FBI Fallout
Although court filings do not name the victim, a person familiar with the matter confirmed the target is Katie Miller, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss non-public details of the investigation. The probe has caused significant disruption within the FBI's Washington field office, where two top counterterrorism supervisors were recently reassigned due to dissatisfaction with their handling of the Miller case.
Darren Cox, the assistant director in charge of the Washington office, issued a statement clarifying that the reassignments were not ordered by Director Kash Patel and were instead a personnel decision based on ongoing evaluation of mission needs, dismissing any claims to the contrary.
U.S. Attorney's Statement
Leah Foley, the U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, released a statement emphasizing the seriousness of technology-facilitated harassment. She warned that attempts to anonymize criminal conduct will not shield individuals from prosecution, asserting that authorities will locate and hold offenders accountable for their actions.
The case underscores growing concerns about digital harassment and the challenges law enforcement faces in tracking perpetrators who attempt to conceal their identities online.
