Denver-based AI data center builder Crusoe has ended its partnership with Boom Supersonic, abandoning a $1.25 billion plan to power its facilities with the company's stationary turbines. The deal, which was set to begin deliveries in 2027, collapsed after Crusoe decided the turbines did not fit its near-term energy strategy at its Texas campus.
The Deal Falls Apart
Crusoe, which recently raised $3.9 billion, had agreed to purchase 29 of Boom's 42-megawatt Superpower turbines for a total of $1.25 billion. The first deliveries were scheduled to start in 2027, but the partnership has now been called off by Boom Supersonic CEO Blake Scholl.
Boom's Superpower turbine shares roughly 80% of its parts with the Symphony engine being developed for the Overture supersonic passenger jet. The company had raised $300 million last year specifically to commercialize the stationary power plant business, with profits intended to help fund Overture's development.
Why Crusoe Walked Away
Scholl explained on X that turbines are no longer part of Crusoe's near-term primary power mix at its Abilene campus, making a launch partnership unfeasible. Crusoe confirmed to TechCrunch that it is no longer doing business with Boom, citing the need to stay flexible with energy solutions as its portfolio grows.
Crusoe's initial 1.2 gigawatt data center in Abilene, built for Oracle and OpenAI, is currently powered by the grid, with a separate gas-turbine plant used only for backup. A new 900 megawatt facility for Microsoft will instead rely on on-site gas turbines, further reducing the need for Boom's turbines.
Boom's Next Steps
Despite losing its launch customer, Boom plans to deliver approximately 250 megawatts of Superpower turbines to other sites next year, with a target of 1 gigawatt by 2028. Scholl expressed gratitude for Crusoe's role in shaping the Superpower product and left the door open for future collaboration.
Crusoe's spokesperson Andrew Schmitt stated that the company remains open to turbines as one option among wind, solar, batteries, and the grid, but that the partnership was not the right fit at this time. The loss of its first customer is seen as a setback for Boom, which had counted on the deal to validate its new business line.
