In a series of media appearances, the Microsoft co-founder said that law enforcement and politicians must join the conversation on what safeguards and monitoring should look like for AI development.
He told NBC's Meet the Press that he was prepared to speak directly with President Donald Trump to convey his concerns, disagreeing with the president's dismissal of AI warnings as a 'hoax'.
Trump Dismisses AI Warnings as Hoaxes
On Saturday, Trump repeated his scepticism of the dangers posed by AI, comparing apocalyptic warnings to climate change and Russian interference in US elections, calling them 'hoaxes'.
He said, 'It's just like, everybody's going to be dead, you're all supposed to be dead now because of global warming. It's like Russia, Russia, Russia hoax. All of these different hoaxes.'
Safeguards Would Not Harm Industry
Gates told CNN that the safeguards needed for AI would not harm the industry, stating that 'the amount of slowing down is not going to be that dramatic.'
He added that a monitoring layer could check if AI is being used for cyberattacks or bio-terrorism, while the Gates Foundation committed $1bn to expand AI access in the developing world.
