Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman published a more than 3,000-word blog post warning local communities not to block AI data center projects, citing national security and economic risks.
Garman Urges Continued Support for AI Infrastructure
Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon Web Services, argued that the United States cannot afford to fall behind in the global race for artificial intelligence dominance. He warned that misinformation campaigns are being deliberately spread to slow down data center construction across the country.
Garman stated that over 100 data center moratoriums are currently being considered nationwide, and if enacted, could hand the US a losing position in AI development with consequences lasting generations.
Amazon Announces New Data Center Commitments
In the same blog post, Amazon outlined a new Data Center Commitment that includes job creation, preventing local energy rate increases, and investing more than $1 billion to support neighboring communities.
The company also revealed it no longer uses nondisclosure agreements with government agencies, a shift prompted by Democratic lawmaker Jamie Raskin's investigation into secret deals between tech firms and local officials.
Industry Leaders Defend Transparency Over Secrecy
David Zapolsky, Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer, explained that the tech industry's history of secrecy was largely a reflex, and that requiring confidentiality no longer made sense for community trust.
He emphasized that community leaders must share information with their constituents, marking a significant departure from past practices of keeping data center negotiations private.
