Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe has declared there is no room for delay as Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda prepare to stage the Africa Cup of Nations next year, with stadiums required to be tested by January.
Motsepe Inspects Venues in Kenya
Motsepe began his inspection tour in Tanzania before visiting Nairobi, where he assessed Kasarani Stadium and the newly built 60,000-capacity Talanta Stadium. He acknowledged that progress had been very good, but warned that some facilities remained below the required standard.
The Caf president said there is little room for delay, insisting that postponement is not on the table. He told BBC Sport Africa: There isn't the slightest consideration of a postponement. There should be no need because there's a deep amount of commitment.
Kasarani Stadium Faces Key Challenges
Kasarani Stadium, which will also host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, has seen limited progress over the past seven months. The playing surface has not yet been laid, and work remains on broadcast cabling, floodlights and sky boxes.
Motsepe also highlighted the need to reconfigure stadium designs to accommodate hundreds of VIPs and heads of state, noting that security arrangements for special guests require a revision of the original plans.
Kenya Vows to Accelerate Preparations
Kenya's cabinet secretary for sports, Salim Mvurya, promised that all preparations would be completed by December to allow for test matches before Motsepe's final assessment visit in January. He said: I assure Caf and Kenyans we will accelerate the preparations for Afcon 2027.
Mvurya added that hosting the tournament is a major legacy opportunity, linking it to Kenya's successful bid for the 2029 World Athletics Championships. He stated: Sport is not just entertainment, it is livelihood, it is economic transformation.
